Welcome to Riverain Bowls Club
Riverain is a popular (flat green) Bowls Centre situated just off the A505 in Woolgrove Road, Walsworth. This is an area within the old market town of Hitchin in the county of Hertfordshire, England. [Post Code = SG4 0AT] [Tel. No: (01462) 420617]
Riverain Bowls Club is a small, private limited company (founded in 1986). It is the owner of an Indoor Bowls Club (founded 1987) and an Outdoor Bowls Club (founded 1990).
The Company's principal objective is to provide a flat green bowls service to the local community. The land occupied by Riverain contains a main building, an outdoor green area and a tarmac car park (70 spaces); all in pleasant surroundings. Facilities for disabled persons are an integral part of the property.
The management of Riverain is in the hands of its directors, company accountant and company secretary (all of whom provide their skills and knowledge free of charge), together with a manageress and an assistant manageress. The main aim of the "management team" is to provide members and visitors with a friendly environment in which to enjoy the Company's facilities.
The building is air-conditioned; it contains the Company's two central attractive forces; i.e. its international standard 8-rink indoor green and its bowls shop. The main building also contains spacious changing and locker rooms, toilets, a pleasant lounge area, bar, and catering services. The Bowls Shop is open to both members and non-members. Anyone planning to buy a set of bowls from us can, subject to rink space availability, be offered a half-hour free roll up in which to try their prospective purchase. Catering facilities include a popular tea bar/lunches service.
Finally, Riverain has a 6-rink outdoor green and a brick pavilion; as time passes, its surrounds are becoming increasingly picturesque.
For both Clubs, a "fees tariff" operates; the tariff covers (a) membership [60+years old, 18-59 years of age, 8 to 17 years of age, and social]; and, (b) matches [rollup, league, club, district, county, national, and association].
To cater for various demands of bowls people, opening hours vary. Unless decreed otherwise by the directors, Riverain is open for business as follows:-
May - Mid Sept : 9.00 hours - 17.00 hours [Mon. - Sat.]
Mid Sept - April : 9.00 hors - 22.30 hours [Mon. - Sun.]
May - Sept: 12.00 hours - sundown.
[We are closed Xmas Day, Boxing Day, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, and May Day.]
Play on the Indoor Green during the "summer" season, is limited to 3 sessions which start at 09.30 hours, 11.30 hours, and 14.00 hours. Play during the "winter" season contains 5 sessions, starting at 09.30 hours; 11.45 hours; 14.00 hours; 16.15 hours; and, 19.00 hours.
For meals after a match" meals, the Company is able to cater for a maximum of 80 persons at any one sitting.
Riverain Indoor Bowls Club
From September to April, we operate a programme of leagues; these leagues are available only to members. Currently, there are 10 daytime leagues [5 morning and 5 afternoon] and 6 evening leagues; within this framework there are single sex, mixed, and open leagues. From May to August we run 5 daytime leagues + a 'turn up and play' session on a Monday evening at 19.00 hours.
Most weekends during the "winter" season, we play 2 friendly matches against other indoor clubs or associations. On a more competitive basis, Riverain as a club competes in both Men's and Ladies Association matches. The Club actively encourages members to participate in inter-club matches, Club, County and National Competitions.
Mainly at 16.15 hours on weekdays, and Saturday + Sunday mornings, rink space is often available for members and guests to have full session "roll-ups". Because 1 hour roll-ups are non-bookable in advance, members are advised to telephone Riverain first so as to check on rink availability.
Riverain Outdoor Bowls Club
Weather permitting, the outdoor green is available for play from late April to the end of September. Members use the green for "roll-ups", the playing of matches against other Clubs, and Club + District + County competitions. Occasionally, the Club hosts "Association" matches. The pavilion has both changing accommodation and the ability to serve "tea and biscuits" meals. For full meals, etc the Club is able to use the Company's facilities in the main building. The Shop is also open for members and visitors to use when it is open. (See "opening hours" above.)
